The Harry S. McAlpin, Jr. Scholarship is a one-time award of $7,000. This year’s winner is a student from Howard University:
Jourdan Henry is a Howard University Junior with a 4.0 average majoring in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Sports Administration. He interns with the Washington Wizards and is sports editor of The Hilltop Campus Newsletter. This will be Jourdan’s third summer interning with ONE World Sports in New York and he has been a radio personality for Glasshouse Radio in Washington DC. Jourdan views sports journalism as “a microcosm of society because it embodies politics, economics and race relations.” He admires the late Pittsburgh Courier sportswriter Wendell Smith who wrote about Jackie Robinson’s rise to fame from the Negro Baseball League.
